Journal Local is a new self-serve hyperlocal platform for journalists and active citizens alike to create their own community web site or niche journalism project.

Founded by Philip John, the technical brains behind respected hyperlocal The Lichfield Blog, the service will benefit from his experience of hyperlocal but also close to a decade of experience working on the web.

Journal Local will offer two editions; Community and Pro.

The free Community edition will give you the opportunity to create your own WordPress blog but without the hassle of installing WordPress yourself. You get a URL like mysite.journallocal.co.uk, a choice of over 100 themes and lots of features specifically selected for their suitability to hyperlocal sites of all shapes and sizes.

As the name suggests, Pro is a paid-for version of Journal Local which offers extra features for £10/month. Included are extra features that many hyperlocals and independent journalists alike are demanding. Crucially, the Pro version also adds revenue generation features so that you can start to pay the costs of running your site or even make a profit.
